The Kremlin confirmed on Tuesday the visit to Moscow of former German Chancellor Gerhard Schröder and did not rule out that the politician has “contacts” with Russian President Vladimir Putin despite the fact that there is no scheduled meeting between the two.

“As far as we know, he (Schröder) is in Moscow. There is no (planned) meeting, but we do not rule out contacts (with the Russian leader),” said the spokesman for the Russian Presidency, Dmitry Peskov.

Previously, the news about the German politician’s visit to Moscow was broadcast by German media.

Under pressure after the start of the Russian campaign in Ukraine, Schröder, criticized for his links with Moscow, announced last May that resigned from a seat on the board of directors of the Russian gas giant Gazpromfor which he was nominated, after having already abandoned the presidency of the board of directors of the oil company Rosneft.

The Social Democratic Party of Germany (SPD) to which the current chancellor belongs, Olaf Scholz, he also began expulsion proceedings against Schröder for his refusal to distance himself from Putin.

Several media outlets wrote last March about another Schröder visit to the Russian capital to address the conflict in Ukraine, without this information being confirmed by the Kremlin.
