Orbán accuses the EU of imposing foreign values on Hungary and criticizes its strategy on Ukraine

July 23 () –

The eurosceptic Prime Minister of Hungary, Viktor Orbán, accused the European Union this Saturday of carrying out an exercise in imposing values on his own country while criticizing the strategy of Washington and Brussels on the war in Ukraine, considering that they are ignoring Moscow’s concerns about NATO’s proximity to its borders.

“The strength, prestige and capacity for action of the West are fading,” Orbán told thousands of supporters in the Romanian city of Baile Tusnad, where he has proclaimed himself a “defender” of Hungary’s cultural and political identity. against the Brussels bureaucracy.

As he has done before, Orbán has pointed to the Hungarian-American billionaire George Soros as the true architect of European policy, something that the philanthropist’s defenders describe as a false and veiled anti-Semitic comment.

“Let them live as they want, but let us live. You just have to accept that the father is a man and the mother is a woman,” Orbán added in relation to an open EU case against a Hungarian law that restricts information on issues of the LGBTQ community.

“Instead of transgender, we only have Transylvania,” he added to his supporters in a comment that also alludes to the status of this Romanian region, historically linked to Hungary, in the middle of a speech interrupted by a politician from the country who raised a banner with the legend “Transylvania is Romanian land forever”, before being escorted by the security of the event.

On Ukraine, Orbán also assured that “with (former US President) Donald Trump and (former German Chancellor) Angela Merkel”, the war “would never have happened”.

“There will be no ceasefire and no peace without a Russian-American negotiation because Moscow no longer wants to discuss with the leaders of Europe, who failed to enforce the 2015 Minsk agreements” on the previous conflict between Russia and Ukraine over the region of the Donbás, according to Orbán.

“Therefore, the peace negotiations will only be realistic in 2024, after the presidential elections in the US,” said the prime minister, in comments collected by the 24.hu portal.

“The Russians formulated a very clear security demand, which they sent to NATO and the US, demanding that Ukraine never become a member of NATO. NATO refused and does not want to discuss it. That is why Russia is trying to impose itself. with weapons,” he added.
