The European Union (EU) has criticized this Friday the execution of a man in Singapore after being convicted of drug crimes and has asked the authorities to commute the sentences of the rest of the inmates who are on death row.
“The EU calls on the Government of Singapore to urgently commute the sentences of prisoners on death row to non-capital punishment and to introduce a moratorium on the death penalty with a view to its eventual abolition,” he said.
The bloc has indicated that this Friday’s execution is the fifth in Singapore since March 30 and the third this month, before stressing that it “firmly opposes the death penalty at all times and in all circumstances.”
Thus, he stressed that “it is a cruel and inhuman punishment that does not serve as a deterrent against crime and represents an unacceptable negative to human dignity and integrity”, while saying that “he will continue working for the abolition of the death penalty in the few countries that still apply it”.
“During the last ten years there have been no executions in 162 member states of the United Nations, which represents 84 percent of the total,” said a spokesman for the European External Action Service (EEAS) in a statement.
