As the first night of major performances began at Glastonbury Festival, some of music’s biggest female acts addressed the Supreme Court’s reversal of Roe v. Wade, who eliminated the federal right to abortion in the US.

Pop star Billie Eilish, the youngest headliner in Glastonbury history, introduced her song “Your Power” while taking the stage with her brother and fellow artist Finneas.

“Today is a really dark day for women in America,” Eilish told the audience at Worthy Farm. “I’m only going to say that because I can’t bear to think about it anymore right now. This song is dedicated to that, I guess…”

The “Ocean Eyes” singer premiered her song “TV” earlier this month, which criticizes the internet’s obsession with celebrity drama and ignorance of reproductive rights.

“The internet has gone crazy watching movie stars on trial / As they overturn Roe v. Wade”, reads the lyrics of the song that refers to the defamation trial between Johnny Depp and Amber Heard.

Indie-rock artist Phoebe Bridgers, who took to the stage earlier, was also among the performers at Glastonbury who condemned the High Court’s decision. The “Motion Sickness” singer wore an all-black outfit on stage as she spoke about the court’s ruling.

Phoebe Bridgers performed hits like “Scott Street” and “I Know the End” during the third day of Glastonbury Festival on June 24, 2022.

“Honestly, [the festival] It’s like super surreal and fun. But I’m having the worst day of my life,” Bridgers admitted to the packed crowd.

“Are there Americans here? Who wants to say f- the Supreme Court in three?

The audience roared as the Grammy-nominated artist led the chant: “One, two, three… F– the Supreme Court! F- that shit. F– America… F– you.”

“All these old, irrelevant motherfuckers trying to tell us what to do with our bodies,” Bridgers continued while playing guitar.

Bridgers previously spoke about abortion rights before Friday’s events. She revealed to her fans on Twitter that she had an abortion last October and that “everyone deserves that access” following the leak of the Supreme Court drafts.

Female performers weren’t the only ones at Glastonbury to speak out about the ruling.

Joe Talbot, lead singer of the British rock band Idles, spoke while introducing his song ‘Mother’.

“They just reverted the laws to the Middle Ages in America, where they were just deciding if it should be illegal to have an abortion or not.”

As Glastonbury Festival continues throughout the weekend, with performances from Paul McCartney, Lorde and Kendrick Lamar to come, more commentary on the landmark ruling can be expected.
