90 percent of Afghans support reopening women's institutes in online poll

Sep. 17 (EUROPA PRESS) –

90 percent of Afghans would support reopening the female institutes closed by the Taliban, according to an online poll, while 10 percent reject it.

The study was carried out by the Afghan television channel Tolo News and is published after the Taliban government attributed the closure to “cultural reasons” and the alleged refusal of the students’ families to continue their studies beyond the six primary classes.

More than 34,100 people have voted through Facebook and 89.7 percent support the opening of women’s institutes, while 10.3 percent are against. Another 9,820 people have voted in the consultation on Instagram and 82 percent support the reopening, compared to 5 percent who reject it.

This same Saturday dozens of girls have demonstrated in the center of Paktia to protest the closure of the female institute, reopened for a short period of time but immediately closed again by the authorities, reports Tolo News. The images of the girls demonstrating have triggered a reaction within Afghanistan.

“No Afghan citizen is against the right to education or for girls to go to class. The few negative votes have nuances and concerns that can be resolved,” argued a feminist activist, Maryam Maarof Arwin, in statements to Tolo News .
education,” said Abeda, to a student.

For the Taliban Minister of Education, Nurolá Munir, “culture is clear to everyone”, according to statements made during a visit to a mosque in the province of Uruzgán. However, Munir believes that “if a better environment is created,” these girls could return to class.

The Taliban government spokesman, Zabihulá Muyahid, had previously argued that the closure of women’s institutes is due to “religious issues.”
