In the country there are 8.6 million formal workers who earn less than 8,600 pesos a month, that is, they do not earn enough to overcome the poverty line and purchase two basic baskets.
The value of the food basket plus the urban non-food basket in April of this year was 4,305 pesos, while the rural one had a cost of 3,105 pesos, according to data from Mexico, how are we doing?
The cost only of the urban food basket in May of this year was 2,177.45 pesos and the rural basket of 1,666.33 pesos, with an increase of 9.8% and 9.3% compared to May 2022, respectively, according to the National Council for the Evaluation of Social Development Policy (Conejal).
“If you earn more than 8,600 pesos, it is not that you have already done it and you can live with decorum. The poverty line was simply exceeded,” said Gómez Hermosillo.
In the country there are another 8.1 million formal workers who earn more than 8,600 pesos and less than 20,000 per month, which is called leaving the survival level, said Rogelio Gómez.
Another problem related to job insecurity has to do with informality.
In Mexico there are 32.2 million people who work informally, without social protection or labor rights, which is equivalent to 55% of the employed population.
“In all economies there is informality, there are people who work and are poor, with low wages. But, in the vast majority of the OECD economies, and in Latin America, it is a minority sector. In Mexico, job insecurity is the majority, job insecurity is the rule and not the exception,” Gómez lamented.
“It is not worth growing and producing poverty. The economy grows, but it does not reduce poverty; keeps her stable. This is a very serious problem of our labor system, ”he added.
Finally, Gómez pointed out, 3.4 million formal workers earn between 20,000 and 40,000 pesos and only 1.7 million workers have incomes that exceed 40,000 pesos per month.
