66th Meeting of the Presiding Officers of the Regional Conference on Women in Latin America and the Caribbean will be held in December at ECLAC

On December 4 and 5, 2024, the Sixty-Sixth Meeting of the Presiding Officers of the Regional Conference on Women in the Americas will be held at the headquarters of the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) in Santiago, Chile. Latin and the Caribbean. Organized by ECLAC, in its capacity as Secretariat of the Conference, in collaboration with UN Women, this meeting is a fundamental space to evaluate progress in gender equality in the region.

One of the central points of the debate agenda will be the XVI Regional Conference on Women to be held in Mexico in 2025. Government delegations will examine progress in the preparations for this event that will address “Transformations in the political, economic, social, cultural and environmental to promote the society of care and gender equality.” At the intergovernmental meeting in Mexico, it will be discussed how the construction of a care society can offer a transformative response to the crises facing the region, promoting a more inclusive, sustainable and equitable development, where care policies are the driving force to reduce gender inequalities and generate greater social well-being.

At the 66th Meeting of the Board of Directors of the Regional Conference, in which Ministers of Women and high authorities of the Mechanisms for the Advancement of Women in the region participate, a special session of regional consultation will also be held prior to the 69th session of the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women, commemorating the 30th anniversary of the Fourth World Conference on Women and the adoption of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action (1995).

One day before, on December 3, the Civil Society Forum will be held, which will serve as preparation for the regional consultation. In addition, an information meeting will be held with the strategic partners of the Gender Equality Observatory of Latin America and the Caribbean (OIG), a key tool for monitoring progress in the Regional Gender Agenda.

On December 4, the 66th Meeting of the Board of Directors will officially open, followed by the approval of the provisional agenda and the reports on the OIG and the Regional Fund to Support Women’s and Feminist Organizations and Movements. This day the special regional consultation session will also be held.

Finally, on December 5, the regional consultation will continue and preparations for the XVI Regional Conference on Women in Mexico will be discussed. The day will conclude with the consideration and approval of the agreements and the closing session.

The 66th Meeting of the Board of Directors will be a key instance for the coordination of regional efforts and the promotion of public policies that strengthen the autonomy of women and gender equality in Latin America and the Caribbean.
