6.8 magnitude earthquake shakes southern Tajikistan

23 Feb. (EUROPA PRESS) –

An earthquake measuring 6.8 on the Richter scale has shaken southeastern Tajikistan, near the border with China, early Thursday morning, as reported by the Euro-Mediterranean Seismological Center (CSEM).

The epicenter has been located 66 kilometers southwest of the city of Murghab, with a depth of 20 kilometers. The quake has not caused major material damage, according to initial reports.

The tremor has been felt 700 kilometers around in Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Kazakhstan, Pakistan and Kyrgyzstan, as reported by the CSEM.

An earthquake measuring 7.5 on the Richter scale registered in October 2015 left 400 deaths in the country, being one of the strongest earthquakes to occur in the Asian country.
