A 6.1 magnitude earthquake struck El Salvador on Wednesday afternoon and was felt as far away as neighboring Guatemala, authorities said. The quake was followed by at least two aftershocks of magnitude 4.1 and 4.5.
The president of El Salvador, Nayib Bukele, He said through his account on X that: “Thank God, there are no personal or material damages reported so far.”
He also reported that “100% of services and traffic on roads continue without interruptions.”
The quake was located in the Pacific Ocean, off the coast of the El Salvadoran department of La Libertad, at a depth of 33 kilometers, according to preliminary data from the United States Geological Survey (USGS).
“Following the earthquake felt in our country, the institutions of the National Civil Protection System are carrying out monitoring at the national level,” said the Minister of the Interior of El Salvador, Juan Carlos Bidegain, in X.
