56 percent reject changes to Moldova’s accession to the EU, according to partial results

This Sunday, 56 percent of Moldovan voters rejected a referendum to introduce changes to the Constitution with a view to the country’s possible accession to the EU, according to partial official results corresponding to 40.56 percent of the vote.

According to these official data, 43.77 percent have expressed their support for the question “Do you support the amendment of the Constitution with a view to the accession of the Republic of Moldova to the European Union?”

The referendum on the EU was held coinciding with the presidential elections, in which Maia Sandu was the first choice (34.66 percent), ahead of Alexandr Stoianoglo (29.61 percent) and Renato Usatii (14 .84 percent), according to official results corresponding to 33.53 percent of the scrutiny.

The Moldovan electoral system establishes that the candidate that obtains more than 50 percent of the vote is directly elected. Otherwise, the two options with the most votes will face each other in a second round that will be held in two weeks, so Sandy and Stoianoglo will compete for the top position in the country on November 3.
