A magnitude 5.0 quake struck the Dominican Republic early Wednesday, waking many on the island, but no damage was reported.
The movement occurred in waters southeast of the capital Santo Domingo at a depth of 45 kilometers (28 miles), according to the United States Geological Survey.
Dominican geologist Osiris de León said the fault that caused the movement is the same one that caused the devastating 2010 earthquake in Haiti and another in 2021, as well as the 2020 magnitude 6.4 quake in Puerto Rico that damaged dozens of schools. and houses and killed one person in the south of the island.
