45 migrants die in two shipwrecks off the coast of Djibouti

At least 45 migrants have died and “many more are missing” in a shipwreck of two boats that took place this Tuesday off the coast of Djibouti, as reported by the International Organization for Migration (IOM).

The international organization has indicated that the boats left Yemen with 310 people on board, but so far only 32 survivors have been rescued. The IOM supports local emergency services in search and rescue operations, according to a statement published on its X social network account.

However, the Djibouti Coast Guard has indicated that 44 people have died and 115 have been rescued, while 61 people “remain missing and search operations continue unabated.” Likewise, he has indicated that the shipwreck took place 150 meters from a beach near the town of Jor Angar, in the northeast of the country.

“Operations are still ongoing and we remain committed to finding missing persons and ensuring the safety of survivors. We extend our deepest condolences to the families of the victims,” ​​the Coast Guard press service said in a statement. posted on his Facebook profile.

In the last year there have been several similar events that, according to the agency, take place when migrants were trying to return from Yemen after having failed in their attempt to reach Saudi Arabia, where they hoped to find work. Every year, hundreds of thousands of migrants from the Horn of Africa, particularly from Ethiopia and Somalia, try to make the route to Saudi territory.
