The technology Microsoft DirectStorage It was integrated into DirectX a few years ago. Broadly speaking, it is a system that allows speed up data transfer between PCIe SSDs and graphics cards, avoiding having to previously go through the CPU as was traditionally done.
This allows for lower loading times and direct access to large files such as those that might contain high resolution textures. Even the latest versions support data compression and decompression directly from the GPU (although this function is not always implemented as it places an extra load on the GPU, in those cases the CPU would be used anyway).
In order to check the performance that DirectStorage offers, and at the same time know how it works with our hardware, UL Benchmarks, formerly known as Futuremark, have integrated a new test into its famous 3DMark graphic benchmark suite.
The test, already integrated into 3DMark, seeks to use this technology exclusively to check the performance of the GPU and the SSD without being influenced by other loads that could affect the transfer (for example, in a game where the GPU is allocating more resources when rendering). Therefore, it is a test that will show the potential of the technology, but not the real improvements it would have in a game in a real environment.
