4 Jul. (EUROPA PRESS) –

Niger’s Civil Protection Directorate reported Wednesday that at least 27 people have died and nearly 1,500 have been left homeless as a result of floods that have affected 31 of the country’s 36 departments.

Another 27 people have been injured in the disaster, which has caused damage in 49 townships and 111 villages, affecting more than 10,600 people, Nigeria’s ANP news agency reported.

More than 10,500 heads of cattle have also been lost. The worst affected region is Maradi, with seven dead and a dozen injured.

Niger is currently in the midst of the rainy season, which runs from June to September. Two years ago, in 2022, more than 190 people were killed, 200 injured and 250,000 affected. Last year, floods caused around fifty deaths, 80 injured and 176,000 affected.
