26 people die in collision between a truck and a trailer in Mexico

At least 26 people died on Sunday on a highway in the northern Mexican state of Tamaulipas in a collision between a truck with a trailer and a van.

The accident occurred in the morning about half an hour from the state capital, Ciudad Victoria, and then they caught fire, reported the Tamaulipas Secretary of Public Security.

Once the authorities arrived at the scene of the accident, they discovered that the truck that was pulling the trailer was no longer at the scene.

A source with the Tamaulipas prosecutor’s office said investigators were not sure if the driver of the unit had fled or if he had also died in the accident.

Among the passengers in the van, believed to belong to a private transportation company, were children, the source said.

All the victims are believed to be Mexican, as national identity documents have been recovered at the scene, according to the source.
