At least 21 people have died, including two children, and 54 others have been injured this Thursday afternoon after a bus plunged into a ravine while en route to the Shiv Khori shrine, located in the state of Jamu and Kashmir. The authorities have sent the injured to the Jamu Medical College Hospital while continuing search and rescue operations, according to the ‘India Express’ newspaper.

“The bus accident in Akhnoor, Jamu, is heartbreaking. I mourn the loss of lives and pray to the almighty to give the bereaved families the strength to bear the irreparable loss. I pray for the speedy recovery of the injured,” said the state lieutenant governor, Manoj Sinha.

Until the arrival of the emergency teams, it was the local inhabitants who began the first aid operations.

The passengers had started their trip from the state of Uttar Pradesh, also in the north of the country, and planned to reach the Mata Vaishno Devi sanctuary, near the city of Katra and in the same region where the accident occurred.
