15 people die in a landslide due to heavy rains in western DRC

April 14 (EUROPA PRESS) –

At least 15 people have died after being buried by a landslide caused by torrential rains that fell in recent hours in the province of Kwilu, in the west of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), as confirmed by authorities.

Dhedhe Mupasa, deputy for Idiofa, the territory in which the town affected by the event, Dibaya-Lubwe, is located, has indicated that the event took place during the day on Saturday, after heavy rain in the area since the day before.

“It is a port where fishermen dock who come to sell fish every Saturday. In exchange they buy soap to return to their fishing camp,” he detailed. “There is a hill above this port and with the rain the earth on this hill collapsed,” she explained.

Likewise, he has warned that the death toll could be higher, since there are a number of people missing under the avalanche, while he has regretted the lack of means to carry out search and rescue tasks in the area.
