🔴 Live: Maduro files an appeal for protection in the Supreme Court; UN denounces “repression” in Venezuela

Tensions are mounting in Venezuela over the disputed re-election of President Nicolás Maduro after last Sunday’s elections. On Wednesday, July 31, the country’s president filed an appeal for protection before the Supreme Court after attacking what he considers to be opposition attempts to destabilize the country, while claiming that candidate Edmundo González won the elections. Meanwhile, voices are increasing about alleged electoral fraud: Colombian President Gustavo Petro said that there are “serious doubts” about the elections, while the G7 issued a statement expressing its solidarity with the Venezuelan people and its concern about the results that have sparked protests. In recent hours, the UN Independent International Mission to Venezuela denounced that the “machinery of repression” has been reactivated in the nation and opposition leader MarĂa Corina Machado claims that new murders and arbitrary arrests have been recorded.
