On Monday, July 29, one day after the presidential elections in Venezuela, President Nicolás Maduro addressed the country to ratify his “victory” and repudiate the accusations of fraud by the opposition, which he described as an attempted “coup d’état.” A few hours earlier, the National Electoral Council (CNE) ratified the reelection of the Chavista leader with more than 51% of the votes, but has not released the detailed results as demanded by most of the international community, which expresses “doubts” about the transparency of the elections. Nine Latin American governments are calling for a meeting at the OAS to address the situation and are demanding a complete review of the results with international observers. For his part, the Attorney General, Tarek William Saab, announced an investigation against the opposition leader MarĂa Corina Machado for an alleged attack on the electoral system that attempted to alter the results, although he did not present evidence.
