() The trailer for “Challengers,” the latest film to star Zendaya, dropped Tuesday, and the “Euphoria” star appears as part of a love triangle and a world tennis championship.
From “Call Me By Your Name” director Luca Guadagnino, “Challengers” casts Zendaya as a tennis prodigious figure who becomes tennis coach Tashi Duncan. Mike Faist, from “West Side Story,” and Josh O’Connor, from “The Crown,” complete the love trio.
At the beginning of the trailer, young Tashi is seen walking onto the court in the early days of her tennis career, as Patrick (O’Connor) tells Art (Faist): “She’s going to make her whole family a millionaires.” .
The trailer also teases an interesting scene where Art and Patrick kiss Tashi in a hotel room after a tournament.
“We usually have different types,” Art tells Tashi, who asks if she should be flattered about that. Art then quips, “Aren’t you everyone’s type?” as Rihanna’s “S&M” plays in the background.
As the twists and turns unfold ––both on and off the tennis court–– the film follows Tashi, now married to Art, as she helps him become “a world-famous grand slam champion,” according to the synopsis.
Part of that transformation involves Art facing Patrick in a “Challengers” tournament, years after the two competed for Tashi.
“The years have passed… but his past hasn’t,” reads a block of text that appears onscreen in the trailer.
“Challengers” will be released in theaters on September 15.
