The president of South Korea, Yoon Sul Yeol, spoke this Thursday with Donald Trump after his virtual victory in the presidential elections, which returned him to the White House four years later, and addressed several topics with him, including the deployment of North Korean troops in Russia.
Yoon, who called the tycoon after the elections to congratulate him on his “landslide victory”, has expressed his hope that the collaboration between Seoul and Washington will continue under his leadership. In this context, they have agreed to hold a face-to-face meeting at an early date, reported the deputy national security advisor, Kim Tae Hyo, according to the Yonhap news agency.
The South Korean head of state has maintained that Trump’s first term “laid the foundation” for the “solid trilateral relationship” between South Korea, the United States and Japan. In the call, which lasted about twelve minutes, they talked about security, economics and global affairs.
In response, according to Kim, Trump has expressed his gratitude and said he hopes to continue the bilateral cooperative relationship, mentioning that he seeks to work in the shipbuilding industry, particularly in exports, repairs and maintenance.
This Tuesday, Ukrainian Defense Minister Rustem Umerov confirmed that the first “small-scale combat” has already taken place with North Korean troops, of which a deployment of up to 15,000 troops is expected. At the moment there are about a thousand North Korean troops in Kursk, although it is expected that in the coming days, as the training ends, North Korean detachments, made up of 3,000 men, will be deployed in five units, which would encompass about 1,500 kilometers.
In previous estimates, the Pentagon estimated that Pyongyang would have sent about 10,000 military personnel to Russian territory. This Monday, Andrei Kovalenko, a senior official at the National Security and Defense Council, reported that North Korean troops had already been attacked by Ukrainian soldiers.
