What would happen to the Earth if the Sun ran out of energy? This is what a study says

As time and science have shown, the solar system has undergone great evolution since its initial formation. With the sun as one of its most important bodies, What would happen if it ceased to exist at some point?

To better explore this idea, research recently published in the 'Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society' analyzed What happens in those planetary systems when their host stars have already exhausted all their energy sources? available.

According to the study, within five billion years Mercury, Venus and Earth could be engulfed by the Sun once it runs out of fuel. This would leave the remaining planets (Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune) orbiting what would be a white dwarf, the final state that stars reach.

The analysis also suggests that, even If the Earth managed to survive this event, it would no longer be habitable.

“It's not clear whether or not the Earth can move fast enough before the Sun can catch up with it and burn it up, but (if it does) the Earth would (still) lose its atmosphere and its ocean and wouldn't be a very nice place to live.” ”explained Boris Gaensicke, professor at the University of Warwick.

As for asteroids and nearby moons, the possibilities suggest that these would be destroyed and turned into dust. This, due to the gravity of the white dwarfs, is so great that it can annihilate them.

According to Dr. Amornrat Aungwerojwit, from Naresuan University in Thailand,
“Previous research had shown that when asteroids, moons and planets approach white dwarfs, the enormous gravity of these stars tears these small planetary bodies into smaller and smaller pieces.”

This analysis yields a new light regarding the transformations that this type of stars have and the material from which the original planetary bodies were made.
