What are the differences between PSP models? Which is the best for you?

Sony has released many iconic consoles throughout its history, but few as remembered as the PlayStation Portable, or PSP. This portable console, launched in 2004, had several versions with improvements and changes. But which of all is the best?

PSP 1000: The original classic

The PSP 1000 is the model that started it all. For many, it remains the best version thanks to its robust design and premium feel. However, it is also the thickest and heaviest, making it less portable compared to its successors.

One of the drawbacks of this model is that its LCD screen tends to degrade over time, showing problems such as ghosting (trace of moving images). Additionally, the PSP 1000 is the slowest version to read UMD discs, which can affect the gaming experience.

PSP 2000: The first evolution

The PSP 2000, known as the PSP Slim, was the first revision of the console. At first glance it is very similar to the PSP 1000, but it is noticeably thinner and lighter. Its menu and volume buttons also have a different design.

This model stands out for its improved screen, with more brightness and less ghosting. In addition, it includes video output and more RAM, allowing for smoother browsing and faster loading times. However, some users note that certain design components feel less sturdy than on the original model.

PSP 3000: An improved version

The PSP 3000 is the third version of the console, and although it is very similar to the PSP 2000, it incorporates notable improvements. One of the easiest ways to identify it is that the Home button has the PlayStation logo.

This model has an even brighter screen and better color quality. Ghosting issues were also fixed with a technique called artifact inversion, although this change was not to everyone’s liking. Despite being light and with a better screen, some consider that the differences with the PSP 2000 are not significant.

PSP GO: The most innovative

The PSP GO (model N1000) is one of the most radically different versions. Unlike its predecessors, it doesn’t have a UMD drive, which means you can only download games digitally. It has 16 GB of internal storage and its sliding design makes it the most portable model.

This model is ideal for those looking for a compact and easy-to-carry console. However, a major downside is that the PSP digital store closed in July 2021, limiting access to new games legally.

PSP E1000/Street: The most economical option

The PSP Street, also known as the PSP E1000, is the most affordable version of the console. While it is similar to the PSP 3000 in design, the quality of the screen and materials is noticeably inferior.

Among its limitations, it does not include Wi-Fi connectivity and only offers mono audio, which affects the gaming experience. Despite being the cheapest option, these disadvantages can be decisive for some users.
