BRUSSELS Jan. 9 () –
The president of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, and the president of the European Council, Antonio Costa, have issued a warning this Thursday to the president-elect of the United States, Donald Trump, days before he takes office that the European Union ” will protect its citizens and democracies”, after the threats against Greenland or the interference in electoral processes in Europe.
In separate messages on social networks published in a coordinated manner, Von der Leyen and Costa insist that the United States is one of the bloc’s closest partners and declare their commitment to strengthening the transatlantic link.
In any case, they emphasize that it is “essential for the EU to protect and strengthen fundamental democratic values and make its economies more competitive and sustainable”, in addition to expanding the global network of partnerships and investing more in mutual security.
For all these reasons, the leaders of the European institutions point out that the EU “will always protect its citizens and the integrity of their democracies and freedoms”, demanding “positive contact” with Trump after the threats made against Denmark to control the island of Greenland or the attacks by tycoon Elon Musk, a Trump supporter and future member of his cabinet, against European leaders.
Thus, both close their message with the expectation that the new administration in Washington will maintain ties based on common values and shared interests. “In a difficult world, Europe and the United States are stronger together,” summarize the German conservative and the Portuguese social democrat.
This message comes after the president-elect of the United States was clear about his plans to forcibly control the island in the Arctic territory, dependent on Denmark, or to apply strong tariffs if Copenhagen does not open itself to selling Greenland.
Apart from Trump’s threats, Von der Leyen and Costa’s statements also respond to Musk’s attacks against several European leaders, which are perceived as an attempt to interfere in electoral processes to promote far-right parties, such as the German Alternative for Germany before the February elections.
