However, that success has been difficult to replicate in other franchises. After the success of Pokemon Go, the company launched Harry Potter Wizards Unite, a game that proposed to catch magical creatures from the phone and which closed in January 2022. Despite this, the company does not give up and now they have formed alliances with Capcom and Disney to create new AR experiences from the Monster Hunters and Marvel franchises.
“In this industry you can’t be afraid of trying new things, on the contrary,” says Mandujano. “If you don’t try new things or experiment, you never learn and in that sense Harry Potter: Wizards Unite was a success for us. And although it is no longer in development, we are proud of it and highly value the lessons it left us, which we continue to use in our products.”
Mandujano refers that the alliances between Niantic and other recognized companies in the world of entertainment contribute to them not only as technology developers, but also with the years of experience that they can bring to the experience of connecting AR with the real world.
Deliver unique experiences in each game
In 2016, when Pokémon Go emerged, scenes of people running after virtual creatures flooded the internet and were common in big cities around the world. To this day, these images still happen, but to a lesser extent and at specific in-game events. However, Niantic wants to replicate that excitement through its new games.
