USB4 2.0 is here with speeds up to 120 Gbps

The new USB version is a reality, although we won’t start seeing products using it until next year.

the new standard USB4 2.0 either USB 4.0 version 2 is already finished. It will have a standard speed of 80Gbpsdouble that of the current one, although it may reach 120Gbps Under some conditions.

The new one USB4 version 2.0 it does not present any revolutionary features, other than increased compatibility with new imaging standards.

As explained by the document presented, thanks to the new encoding of the PAM3 signal, it is possible to make connections of 80Gbps through the new 80Gbps USB-C active cables or of the 40 Gbps passive cables already existing.

High-performance USB4-based displays and other dedicated devices will be able to go beyond this 80 Gbps barrier. Through asymmetrical connections, it will be possible to achieve 120Gbps in one direction and 40 Gbps in the other.

USB4 2.0 more compatible

The new standard also supports PCIe-4 and the newly introduced DisplayPort 2.1. Of course, it also works with USB4 1.0, USB 2.0 and Thunderbolt 3.

An important feature is that it has the ability to tunnel USB 3.2 connectionsso they go faster than their 20 Gbps limit.

USB Implementers Forum (USB-IF) has also presented the USB 4 2.0 logos which will use this new standard:

Surprisingly, nowhere does it state that it is USB4 2.0a way of acknowledging that the nomenclature is already becoming very absurd, with so many numbers and variants.

The logos only indicate that the cable can transmit at 80 Gbpsand some of them also reflect the electrical power that they can transmit to the different devices that use the cable USB Type-C as power or recharge. there will be 60 Y 240Wfor mobiles and laptops, respectively.

Interestingly, today Intel has also introduced a new version of Thunderbolt, which at the moment is reluctant to call Thunderbolt 5, with the same features as USB4 2.0. Actually the latter has used the recommendations of Intel.

The final specification has just come out, so cables and devices with USB4 2.0 that transmit to 80GbpsThey will still take a while to arrive. We will have to wait until 2023.
