José Fernández, Undersecretary of State for Economic Growth, Energy and the Environment, traveled this Friday to Bogotá, Colombia, where he will hold meetings with President Gustavo Petro with the “intent to deepen collaboration” with his government “on environmental, economic, and key energy sources”, announced the Foreign Ministry.
In addition, in Bogotá, the undersecretary will seek to promote the commitment established in the Association of the Americas for Economic Prosperity to promote a positive economic agenda for the region and discuss joint projects between the US and Colombia to protect the environment and advances in telecommunications.
Fernández’s trip will continue on March 17 and 18 in Panama City, and then in Brasilia and Rio de Janeiro, in Brazil, from March 21 to 23. Throughout his visit to the region, the undersecretary will seek to “advance key objectives of the Administration, including the areas of global health, food security, supply chain resilience, the environment, and regional economic cooperation throughout the Western Hemisphere.” , detailed State in a release.
“During my trip to Colombia, Panama and Brazil this week and next, I am excited to engage regional governments to address economic inequality, foster economic integration, create good jobs and restore faith in democracy,” Fernández said in a video posted on their social media.
In Panama, Fernández will lead the US delegation and will host the first high-level ministerial meeting of the Americas Health and Economic Dialogue, which was launched at the Summit of the Americas last June. In it, he will facilitate conversations between senior health and finance officials across the Western Hemisphere to build countries’ resilience against future pandemics.
While in Brazil, he will seek to strengthen ties with Lula after President’s visit to Washington on February 10 and “engage more closely with the new Brazilian leadership as it determines important policy positions on the environment, energy, food security, critical minerals, agriculture and other economic issues.”
In Brasilia, Fernández will meet with senior government officials and social leaders to discuss expanding collaboration between the two countries, and in Rio de Janeiro he will speak with environmental non-governmental organizations that are key players in health, clean energy, and economic empowerment of the women.
“I plan to show the US commitment to protect the environment, improve the health and well-being of communities around the world, and also emphasize the importance of a clean and just energy transition,” Fernández added.
