United Nations warns that nuclear risks "are alarmingly high" and urges avoid escalation

March 28 () –

The General Secretariat of the United Nations has warned this Monday that the nuclear risks, after the announcement of the Russian president, Vladimir Putin, to transfer nuclear weapons to Belarus, “are alarmingly high” and urges to avoid an escalation.

The spokesman Stéphane Dujarric has indicated that the “general state of tensions around nuclear weapons” is “very worrying”, for which he has urged to avoid “all actions that could lead to a miscalculation or an escalation with catastrophic consequences.”

Thus, Dujarric also wanted to recall compliance with the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty: “All states parties, both those that have nuclear weapons and those that do not, must strictly adhere to the commitments and obligations they have assumed under the treaty” .

President Putin announced on Saturday an agreement for the deployment of Russian tactical nuclear weapons, that is, short-range, on the territory of Belarus in response to the British announcement of the possible supply of depleted uranium ammunition to Ukraine.

Putin explained that the construction of the facilities for the storage of tactical nuclear weapons in Belarus will be completed on July 1, and stressed that the weapons would remain under Russian control. In addition, he stressed that sending these types of nuclear weapons does not violate non-proliferation agreements because the United States has had nuclear weapons in other countries for years.
