UN welcomes donors' commitment to secure more than $590 million for Ethiopia

April 16 (EUROPA PRESS) –

The United Nations reported this Tuesday that donor countries have promised to secure more than 630 million dollars (592.5 million euros) to address the humanitarian situation in Ethiopia, although it has urged countries to contribute more funds to address the crisis in the African country.

“I am very pleased that 21 announcements of financial support for almost $630 million have been made today,” said the UN Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs, Joyce Msuya, from Geneva, adding that “it is just the beginning” and who expect greater support during the year.

Previously, Msuya has indicated during his speaking turn that humanitarian challenges persist in the African country and that this requires “partnerships” as well as support to “address the needs of vulnerable communities.”

“We are committed to continuing to support these efforts through anticipatory actions and ensuring that humanitarian response is delivered with and through the national response system where possible,” he added.

The UN has indicated that the meteorological conditions of the 'El Niño' phenomenon “have exacerbated a drought” that affects “millions of people”, while malnutrition rates in areas of Afar, Ahmara and Tigray remain “a cause for great concern.” “.
