UN special envoy for Syria advocates Syrian-led political transition

MADRID Dec. 31 (EUROPA PRESS) –

The United Nations special envoy for Syria, Geir Pedersen, has reiterated before representatives of Russia, France and Germany the need for Syrians to lead a political transition to democracy, after the overthrow of President Bashar al Assad in an offensive led by rebel and jihadist forces at the end of November.

“Its constant message is that the key principles of Resolution 2254 enjoy broad consensus,” said the deputy spokesperson to the UN Secretary General Florencia Soto Niño-Martínez, during a press conference.

“These principles include: a transition led and owned by the Syrians; establishing credible, inclusive and non-sectarian governance, undertaking constitutional reform; and the holding of free and fair elections,” he added after announcing that Pedersen will visit the country in early of next year.

Pedersen expressed himself along these lines last Saturday during an appearance before the United Nations Security Council, a day after hostilities were recorded in Deir Ezzor, approximately one kilometer from the UN offices.

The insecurity, extended to other provinces of the country such as Aleppo, Homs, Hama, Latakia, Tartus, Damascus, has forced the suspension of humanitarian operations in several areas of the country, the spokesperson said.

Despite this, the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) has confirmed that during the last month, more than 1.7 million people received assistance to access an essential product such as bread, and more than 265,000 received other types of food support.
