Passes second resolution supporting UNRWA and deplores legislation adopted by Israeli Parliament
Dec. 11 (EUROPA PRESS) –
The United Nations General Assembly approved a resolution this Wednesday calling for an “immediate, unconditional and permanent” ceasefire in the Gaza Strip, as well as the release of all hostages held in the Palestinian enclave.
Specifically, 158 countries have voted in favor, while nine have voted against – among them Argentina, the United States and Israel – and another 13 have abstained. The session was held in the face of a United States veto in the UN Security Council.
The text approved by the General Assembly demands “immediate access of the civilian population of the Gaza Strip to basic services” and calls for “facilitating the full, rapid, safe and unimpeded entry of large-scale humanitarian assistance” in the enclave.
Likewise, it calls on the parties to respect International Law and to protect civilians, especially women and children, as well as any person “out of combat”, and “civilian property.”
The resolution highlights that the United Nations Refugee Agency in the Near East (UNRWA) is “the backbone” of humanitarian aid provided in Gaza, which is why it “rejects actions that undermine the implementation” of its mandate.
Likewise, it calls for “accountability” for crimes committed during the conflict and reiterates its “unwavering” commitment to a two-state solution with “recognized borders” in accordance with International Law that allow both Israel and Palestine to live together “in peace”.
Likewise, the approved text rejects “any attempt at demographic or territorial change in the Gaza Strip”, including “actions that reduce” its territory. In addition, it “underlines the importance of unifying” the enclave with the West Bank under the mandate of the Palestinian Authority.
In parallel, the Assembly has adopted another resolution – with 159 votes in favor, eleven abstentions and nine votes against, among them Israel, Argentina and the United States – that reiterates its support for UNRWA and deplores the legislation adopted by Parliament Israeli.
The text recognizes that “any interruption or suspension” of the agency’s work “would have serious humanitarian consequences for millions of Palestine refugees”, while no organization “can replace or substitute” the capacity or mandate of UNRWA.
“Deplores the fact that the inviolability of United Nations facilities has been violated, that the immunity of the organization’s property and assets has not been respected, and that UN personnel, facilities and assets have not been protected,” reads the resolution.
At the same time, it demands that Israel respect the mandate of UNRWA, as well as “its privileges and immunities”, “and act immediately so that its operations can be carried out without impediments or restrictions” in Gaza and the West Bank, including East Jerusalem. .
