The Ukrainian authorities have pointed out this Thursday the need to work more actively with the thirty countries that abstained from voting on the latest resolution presented to the United Nations General Assembly to condemn and reject Russia’s maneuvers to annex the territories of Kherson, Lugansk , Zaporizhia and Donetsk.
The spokesman for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Oleg Nikolenko, has pointed out that those 35 countries that abstained in that vote are precisely the audience with which Ukraine must work “actively”, in order to achieve their support in future resolutions and initiatives. of the international community.
Nikolenko has remarked that although they do not accept the arguments of these 35 countries to justify their position – either because they declare themselves representatives of large regional groups with the intention of mediating or because they have an active military and political situation – they will work with them for future resolutions .
In turn, Nikolenko has positively valued the failed tour of Africa by Foreign Minister Dimitro Kuleba, who despite having to interrupt it due to the new Russian offensive on several Ukrainian cities, the results of that last vote in the United Nations shows the change to the best of some of the African countries he visited.
“Previously they would have abstained, but this time they have changed and supported us. This is a direct result of Ukrainian diplomacy,” he celebrated in statements to Ukrainian television, collected by the Ukrinform agency.
On Wednesday Ukraine received its most unanimous support within the United Nations after 143 countries voted in favor of a resolution condemning and rejecting Russia’s attempts to annex the Kherson, Lugansk, Zaporizhia and Donetsk regions after a series of popular consultations that were not recognized by the vast majority of the international community.
Only five countries — North Korea, Syria, Nicaragua, Belarus and Russia — voted against this resolution titled ‘Territorial Integrity of Ukraine: Upholding the Principles of the United Nations Charter’, which was sponsored by up to 70 countries.
Another 35 countries abstained, including India, China, Cuba, Pakistan and several African nations, who have been criticized since the start of the war for showing lukewarm condemnation of Russian aggression.
