Ubisoft confirms one of its worst crises: it delays ‘Assassin’s Creed Shadows’ again amid a brutal cut and low sales

Assassin's Creed Shadows 1

‘Assassin’s Creed Shadows’ was supposed to hit the main platforms on November 15, but Ubisoft decided a few months ago to move the date to February 14, 2025. If you have been crossing off days on your calendar for a while to enjoy the new installment of the saga, the French company has something to say: you have to wait a little longer.

If all goes well, the title that promises to take us to feudal Japan in the 16th century will be released on March 20 of this year. We’re talking about a delay of just over a month, time that Ubisoft says it needs to continue developing the game. Now, all this happens at a really difficult time for the video game company.

Ubisoft’s bad moment and hopes for ‘Assassin’s Creed Shadows’

Ubisoft is going through one of the worst crises in its history. Its managers have decided to launch an aggressive cost reduction plan, something that will obviously have a direct impact on its active projects. They themselves acknowledge in a press release that they will be “very selective in investments” for fiscal year 2025-2026.

Specifically, the company hopes that its plan will allow it to reduce its fixed costs by 200 million euros in the aforementioned period. Budgetary adjustments at the Saint-Mandé-based firm have been a reality for months. In December they decided to close their “free Call of Duty” called XDefiant’, a move that was accompanied by the closure of several studios.

If we focus on the rest of its products, the outlook has not been very encouraging either. ‘Star Wars: Outlaws’, which was presented as one of the most ambitious proposals of the year, has finally had some Christmas sales lower than expected. In this scenario, hopes for a better year are pinned on ‘Assassin’s Creed Shadows’.

I have played 'Star Wars Outlaws' and I already know what Ubisoft's plan is with the saga: create a totally cinematic sandbox

Ubisoft plans to make the most of this additional month of development to better apply player feedback gathered over the past three months and “create the best conditions for launch” by continuing to engage with the community. Certainly, the company hopes – and needs – that this launch will have good results.
