In 2021 ZA/UM, the team responsible for Disco Elysium (2019), imploded with the dismissal of screenwriters Robert Kurvitz and Helen Hindpere as well as artist Aleksander Rostov. Today, on the game’s fifth anniversary, two new development teams, Dark Math Games and Longdue, have been launched within minutes of each other, who coincide in having ZA/UM staff on their staff and are working on a spiritual successor. by Disco Elysium. To these two studies we must add Red Info, a team founded by Kurvitz and Rostov in 2022.

Founded in 2023, Dark Math Games is described as a spin-off from the original Disco Elysium development team. This studio is made up of about 20 people who worked on the aforementioned title and today they have presented XXX Nightshift, a “true detective role-playing game.” XXX Nightshift is set in the year 2086 and puts players in the shoes of Dinorah Katz, a Patrol Op who finds herself trapped in a luxurious ski resort in Antarctica. The title promises to offer a role-playing experience for a player where decisions will be transcendental for the development of the story and its ending.

As the trailer with which XXX Nightshift was presented shows, the game is quite similar to Disco Elysium, with its isometric perspective and its way of presenting dialogue as the player makes decisions. For now the title has no release date or window and its only confirmed platform has been PC (Steam).

In second place we have Longdue, who in addition to ZA/UM veterans who have worked on Disco Elysium has developers from Bungie, Rockstar Games and Brave At Night among others. Longdue has not yet named his project and has only shown a piece of concept art (which you have at the end of the news), but he claims to be working on “a psychogeographic role-playing game with a deep narrative” that will continue the legacy of Disco Elysium. The title is also inspired by classics of the role-playing genre such as Ultima, Planescape, Fallout and Wizardry.

Longdue’s unnamed RPG prioritizes narrative, the interaction between internal worlds and external landscapes, and “features innovative psychogeographic RPG mechanics, in which every decision reshapes both the world and the characters that inhabit it.”
