At least two people have died and more than 200 have been injured as Typhoon Gaemi batters Taiwan, authorities have confirmed, adding that nine other people are missing after a fishing boat sank off the island’s coast.
The Central Emergency Operations Center (CECO) has indicated that so far 227 people have been confirmed injured by the typhoon, which has led to the closure of schools and offices in 22 cities and counties in Taiwan, according to the state news agency, CNA.
Meanwhile, nine Burmese citizens have gone missing after a Tanzanian-flagged fishing boat sank off the coast of the port of Kaohsiung, and search and rescue efforts have not yet been possible due to the weather conditions, according to the German news agency DPA.
The typhoon is crossing the island with winds of about 184 kilometers per hour and gusts of up to 227 kilometers per hour and, although it has weakened in the last few hours after making landfall, the authorities are maintaining the alerts issued.
Some 87,000 homes have been left without electricity, while more than 400 domestic and international flights have been cancelled. The typhoon made landfall in Yilan (east) and moved towards the Taiwan Strait early in the day.
