Thousands evacuated after unexploded World War II bomb found in Dresden, Germany

MADRID Jan. 9 () –

The authorities of the German city of Dresden have begun this Thursday the evacuation of thousands of people in order to defuse an unactivated World War II bomb recently found near one of the town’s bridges.

The Saxony Police have indicated on their account on the social network

“We ask all residents of the area to follow the instructions of our colleagues,” he added, after the discovery during the day on Wednesday of the aforementioned bomb near one of the ends of the Carola bridge.

The authorities, who activated the sirens early in the day to notify the start of the evacuation, have indicated that around 10,000 people will have to temporarily leave the area, according to the German news agency DPA.

The artifact was located during demolition work on the aforementioned bridge over the Elbe River in the city of Dresden, located in eastern Germany. A section of the bridge collapsed in September, prompting authorities to order its complete demolition.

During World War II, the city was devastated after a series of bombings carried out in February 1945 by the Americans and British, which left at least 25,000 civilians dead. Since then, numerous unactivated bombs have been found in the town.
