The current era of Xbox includes cloud gaming option. Xbox Cloud is Microsoft’s platform that uses Azure technology and data centers, and at some point it was a very ambitious plan that led to the planning of a dedicated device. However, gaming via streaming has not become as massive an experience as one would think and little by little Xbox gave a fair dimension to that part of its business. Despite this, the piece of hardware made notable progress and its design was recently revealed.
Patent reveals Xbox Keystone design, cloud gaming device
A report by Zac Bowden and Jez Cordenjournalists from Windows Centralshared details about a patent that shows the design of the Xbox Keystonethat cloud gaming device that was much talked about in 2021 and 2022. Although the patent does not refer to details about the size, it is estimated that Keystone was smaller than an Xbox Series S but unlike Microsoft consoles, its design was square and the objective was that it could be easily placed on a piece of furniture or entertainment center close to the screen. A simple, small and easy-to-place design.
The Xbox Keystone had a circular section at the top, likely for ventilation, like the Xbox One S and Xbox Series S designs. The front included a power button and a USB input. On the right side, this device had a button for Xbox controller recognition, just like the one Microsoft consoles have today.
As for the back, the Xbox Keystone design shows an HDMI input, an Ethernet port, and the power cable input. A sober proposal designed only to play on Xbox Cloud since reports years ago indicated that it would not have storage space, it would only provide the cloud gaming experience with Xbox Game Pass as the axis and nothing else.
Unfortunately, the Xbox Keystone was relegated and no further information has been revealed about this Microsoft device for playing via streaming. Part of the company’s plan was to offer it in exchange for $100 USD, but according to Phil Spencer, the financial equilibrium point was not found to take the step towards manufacturing and marketing.
Today, Xbox Cloud is part of the Xbox Game Pass Ultimate offering and it is possible to play a large number of titles on Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, PC and mobile, although performance depends on the connection speed and its stability, but an optimal level has not been reached as that of the hardware operating to run a game.
What do you think of this Xbox Keystone proposal that gained a lot of momentum at the time?
