This is the new Science building inaugurated by the Javeriana University

The Pontifical Javeriana University opened the doors of new Félix Restrepo SJ center, dedicated to innovation, research and development of science; in crucial areas such as environmental biotechnology, renewable energies, biodiversity conservation, nutrition, tropical diseases, nanotechnology, among others.

The investment for its construction It was $250,000 million, and the estimate for laboratory equipment amounted to $72,000 million.

Now, the 11-story center will have 44 specialized laboratories, 34 teaching spaces and 21 areas that integrate teaching and research, where external services will also be provided.

“The knowledge generated by universities and their communities must go beyond the classrooms and be put at the service of society and the development of the country. In these times that change incredibly quickly, the experience of the academy, and the tools it has, are a crucial factor in finding the most appropriate responses to the challenges posed by the environment,” commented Luis Fernando Múnera SJ.rector of the Javeriana

It will be the headquarters of the Faculty of Sciences of the University, in which important research has been carried out in the service of the country, such as phytomedicines for the treatment of breast cancer, acute myeloid leukemia and respiratory diseases such as covid-19.

The building will house the Institute of Inborn Errors and Metabolism, which, in alliance with the Institute of Genetics and the San Ignacio University Hospital, have managed to put 22 tests at the service of the scientific and medical community for the diagnosis of rare and metabolic diseases. that have already benefited more than 60,000 Colombians.

For her part, Alba Alicia Trespalacios, dean of the Faculty of Sciences, highlighted that “The building’s research and teaching laboratories will allow scientists to advance, in an interdisciplinary manner, in various key areas to address important global and local problems, such as diseases, climate change and food security.”.
