But little by little, the deepfake market in Latin America, and particularly in Mexico, has grown rapidly, driven by the adoption of artificial intelligence (AI) for various purposes, from entertainment to scams.

In 2023, deepfake incidents in Mexico increased by 700%, reflecting the alarming growth of this technology in the field of identity fraud, especially in sectors such as cryptocurrencies and fintech, according to Kaspersky. Therefore, knowing how to identify this type of fraud is starting to become more relevant for companies.

To this end, Honor has unveiled the first AI that detects deepfakes from a device. This technology uses algorithms to analyse minute details in audiovisual content, identifying discrepancies in pixel coherence, image composition and continuity between frames.

The solution aims to protect users from growing threats such as identity theft and the spread of disinformation, according to George Zhao, CEP of Honor.

One of the main reasons why deepfakes are difficult to detect is that the most revealing details, such as facial edges, lip syncing, or lighting, are often not perceptible to the human eye.

Among the solutions that already exist, Microsoft has developed tools such as Video Authenticator, which analyzes videos in real time and provides a confidence score to indicate the likelihood that the content has been manipulated.

However, the company itself admits that the evolution of deepfakes continues to outpace available detection technologies, as AI models continue to learn and create more sophisticated content.

Deloitte has highlighted that the problem with deepfakes lies not only in the technical difficulty of detecting them, but also in the speed with which misinformation can spread once content goes viral. This poses an additional challenge, since even if a deepfake is eventually identified, the damage to reputation or public trust is difficult to bear and remedy.
