The presidents of Mexico, the United States and Canada met in the framework of the North American Leaders Summit, held in Mexico City. The three heads of state demonstrated their close relationship and intention to increase cooperation, mainly on economic and migration issues. The Mexican president asked his US counterpart to pressure the Congress of his country to achieve immigration reform and thanked them for being open to making changes in his policies.
Joe Biden, President of the United States, and Justin Trudeau, Prime Minister of Canada, traveled to Mexico to meet with Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador (AMLO), to advance a diplomatic meeting, popularly known as the summit of the ‘Three Amigos’.
After finishing a meeting of several hours in the National Palace of Mexico, the three heads of state gave a joint statement.
The speeches drew attention for the constant use of words such as “cooperation”, “respect” and “friends” to exalt the good relationship that the bloc currently enjoys.
This is the first time in 10 years that a President of the United States has visited Mexico.
Biden is committed to immigration issues
Joe Biden was the first to speak and took the opportunity to thank AMLO for hosting the summit, after assuring that the meeting “laid the foundations” to promote joint work and growth in the region before the world.
He expressed his interest in making the region “the most competitive, prosperous and resilient place in the world”. President Biden said that building a solid economy would be the basis for solving other problems in the region.
Biden thanked AMLO for “receiving” in his territory those who are deported for entering the United States irregularly and took the opportunity to talk about the visit he made to El Paso, Texas prior to his arrival in Mexico.
At the border, the US president spoke with immigration agents and saw first-hand the situation that thousands of migrants experience daily.
The immigration authorities of the United States reported that during fiscal year 2022, they detained a record 2.2 million people who sought to reach the other side of the border.
Last week, the Biden government announced a new policy that will allow the entry of up to 30,000 migrants per month from Nicaragua, Cuba, Venezuela and Haiti, as long as they do so by air in order to decongest land borders.
Trudeau insists on boosting the trilateral economy
The Canadian Prime Minister was the second to speak and emphasized the need for the three governments to set a common goal, referring to their interest in fostering an economic alliance.
Similarly, he referred to his intention to promote clean economies through renewable energy.
He also spoke about the role of women, ensuring that by promoting their participation in the societies of the three countries, the goal of consolidating the economy globally could be achieved.
AMLO made a striking request to Biden
Finally, the president of the host country advanced a plan for the creation of a committee of specialists that intends that businessmen and public workers work together to increase trilateral trade.
For his part, López Obrador announced that Foreign Secretary Marcelo Ebrard will lead the Mexican delegation.
AMLO thanked Trudeau for maintaining a program that grants temporary visas to Mexican agricultural workers, and which, according to the president, has already helped more than 25,000 migrants to improve their living conditions.
The Mexican president also pledged with his counterparts to tackle fentanyl trafficking, a serious public health problem that kills millions of people each year, especially in the United States.
AMLO assured that he has placed this work in the hands of the Armed Forces, both in ports and customs, as well as in the destruction of laboratories where the synthetic drug is made, which is imported from Asia and marketed by Mexican cartels.
He also thanked Biden for improving conditions for emigrant Mexicans, eliminating raids and “not having built a single inch of wall on the border, even if conservatives don’t like it.”
To close his speech, AMLO made a special request to his US counterpart: insist on Congress to regularize the immigration status of Mexicans in that country and develop plans to carry out organized migrations.
The meeting also dealt with other issues.
During the meeting on Tuesday, the three leaders also agreed to study measures to promote the semiconductor industry in North America, by organizing the first trilateral semiconductor forum.
On the environment, leaders pledged to reduce methane emissions from solid waste and sewage by at least 15% by 2030, compared to 2020 levels.
In addition to the statements made by the leaders, the White House published a statement in which it ensures that the three countries agreed to create a virtual platform to provide information to people who seek to migrate, in order to prevent them from resorting to human trafficking networks. .
They also pledged to advance on issues of information exchange, renewal of commitments, health and inclusion.
The leaders of the three countries took advantage of their meeting to discuss the political situation in Brazil and condemned the events of January 8, when Bolsonaro groups tried to take over the official institutions of Brasilia.
After the statements, President Joe Biden left in a strong security device bound for the Mexico City International Airport to leave the country, while Prime Minister Trudeau will fulfill other commitments within his official agenda.
The last time the Three Amigos they met was in November 2021 in Washington. Under the presidency of Donald Trump (2017-2021) no meeting was held.
The Canadian Prime Minister offered his country to hold the next summit between the three countries.
