White House National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan has announced that the United States is coordinating with its partners and allies to impose new sanctions against Iran's drone and missile program, as well as against the Revolutionary Guard and against the Ministry of Defense, as a way of responding to Tehran's attack against Israeli territory, which occurred as a response to the bombing against the Iranian Consulate in Damascus.
“Following Iran's unprecedented airstrike against Israel, President Biden is coordinating with allies and partners, including the G7, and leaders of both parties in Congress, on a comprehensive response. In the coming Within days, the United States will impose new sanctions against Iran, including its missile and drone program, as well as new sanctions against entities that support the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) and the Ministry of Defense,” Sullivan said in a statement.
In that sense, he has expressed that the rest of the countries will follow them in this imposition of sanctions to continue the “pressure” and to hold the Iranian Government “accountable for its malicious and destabilizing actions.”
Sullivan has also reported that the Department of Defense and the United States Central Command (CENTCOM) are strengthening and expanding the “successful integration” of air defense, anti-missile and early warning systems in the Middle East to counter “even more “Iranian attack capabilities.
Finally, he recalled that these measures are in addition to the more than 600 entities and individuals sanctioned in the last three years for their relations with Iran and its related militias such as the Palestinian group Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas), the Shiite party-militia Lebanese Hezbollah, the Houthi rebels of Yemen or the Iraqi armed group Kataib Hezbollah.
“These new sanctions and other measures will continue a steady pace of pressure to contain and degrade Iran's military capabilities and effectiveness and address the full range of its problematic behaviors,” he added.
