The US says it "hopes to work with the new government elected by the Thai people"

May 16. (EUROPE PRESS) –

The Government of the United States has congratulated the Thai people on Monday for the result of the general elections, in which voters have supported the pro-democratic formations and rejected the military government, assuring that they “hope to work with the newly elected government”.

State Department spokesman Vedant Patel congratulated “the tens of millions of people throughout the Kingdom of Thailand who have participated in the elections” and stressed that the US government supports “the right of the people to democratically elect their own leaders.”

“As a longtime friend and ally of Thailand, the United States looks forward to seeing the final results and working with the next Thai government to advance our common goals for the benefit of our two peoples,” he told a news conference.

The leader of the Thai party Avanzar, Pita Limjaroenrat, affirmed on Monday that he was ready to be the next prime minister of the country, after his formation obtained a surprising victory in elections marked by the rejection of the military government in favor of pro-democratic candidates.

Avanzar aspires to form an alliance of six parties, including the Pheu Thai party, which came second in the elections and with which it would add 309 seats in Parliament, however below the 376 that Pita needs to have full guarantees and avoid any possible veto. Even so, the leader of the winning party is confident that he will be enough to govern.

In this sense, Limjaroenrat has explained that the six parties are already willing to discuss specific agreements on key issues, reports the Thai newspaper ‘The Nation’.
