The United States Government announced this Thursday that it will provide 450,000 dollars (about 438,000 euros) in emergency aid to Mozambique after the passage of cyclone ‘Chido’, which has left at least 120 dead and more than 680,000 homeless in the African country. as well as a health system in a critical situation.
The US Embassy in Maputo has indicated that the US Agency for International Development (USAID) will be responsible for providing the aid, which seeks to “address the urgent needs of affected populations throughout the province of Cabo Delgado , focusing on shelter and water, sanitation and hygiene assistance.
The authorities are evaluating the full scope of the disaster, together with the US Government, which “will continue to work closely with the National Institute of Disaster Management to coordinate the response to the cyclone,” reads a statement from the diplomatic embassy.
“The United States Government recognizes the immense challenges faced by affected people and wishes to reaffirm our solidarity. Our assistance will provide vital aid to those most affected by the cyclone, helping to reduce human suffering and supporting recovery efforts.” , declared the ambassador, Peter Vrooman.
For its part, the World Food Program (WFP), which indicated in December that almost the entire population needs food, shelter, health care and access to clean and safe water, has indicated that it has activated a joint response plan with the Organization International for Migration (IOM) and the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF).
WFP has provided food assistance to almost 500,000 internally displaced persons and returnees affected by the ongoing conflict in Cabo Delgado, but needs $19 million (€18.5 million) to provide food aid to 215,000 people affected by the cyclone during the next three months.
