The spokesman for the United States Department of State, Matthew Miller, has justified his help to Israel to shoot down Iranian missiles due to their “long relationship” in terms of security after the president of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky, reproached his partners for not receiving the same aid as the Israeli Government.
“It is important to point out the context in which we have a totally different relationship with Ukraine and Israel, (…) we have been collaborating with Israel for decades on security matters, providing it with direct military aid, not only during the last two years of conflict, but for decades, and maintaining a long and close communication between our Army and the Israeli one,” Miller declared during a press conference.
Furthermore, he explained that, while Israel is one of the most important allies of the United States outside of NATO, that same level of relationship did not exist with Ukraine before the conflict, and he recalled the large amount of aid they have sent to kyiv. to help them in the war against Russia.
“What we have done since the conflict broke out is provide them with the equipment they need to defend themselves, (…) and much of the reason they have been able to successfully defend themselves against volley after volley of Russian attacks is due to those air defense systems that we have provided them,” he added.
Miller has also assured that a similar intervention in Ukraine would lead to a direct armed conflict with Russia, something that Washington refuses, and that Zelensky has criticized that Israel is not in NATO and that it has not been involved. to a war with Iran.
“I understand perfectly your position. I would expect that the president of any country that is under such withering attacks would look for any possible way to defend its people. I understand it perfectly,” the spokesperson added.
