Both the United States and the UN on Monday insisted on a two-state solution to end the Israeli-Palestinian conflict after Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu called for “eradicating the idea of establishing a Palestinian state.”
“We will demand that the parties honor their commitments and we will ensure that we continue in accordance with the Oslo Accords and Security Council resolutions to pursue a vision of a two-state solution that includes the states of Israel and Palestine, living one side by side in peace and security,” said Farhan Haq, Deputy Spokesman for the UN Secretary General.
For his part, the spokesman for the United States Security Council, John Kirby, has assured that the president of the United States, Joe Biden, remains “committed” to the “value” and “viability” of a two-state solution.
Netanyahu’s statements came on the same day that the Israeli authorities announced the construction of 5,700 new homes in Jewish settlements in the West Bank.
Despite the fact that neither the UN nor the United States have yet ruled on the matter, on other occasions they have condemned said extensions. The number of new homes announced this Monday exceeds the 4,427 homes announced throughout 2022. In total this year it has announced the construction of 13,082 homes, above the previous annual record of 12,159, corresponding to 2020.
ISRAELI SETTLERS ATTACKS ON PALESTINIANS
In addition, Haq has ensured that the UN humanitarian coordinator in the Middle East, Lynn Hastings, stated over the weekend that violence by Israeli settlers against Palestinians had increased this year.
“Two such incidents were recorded daily in 2022, while this year there were three incidents per day. In a three-day period last week alone, he said, there were 21 settler attacks against Palestinians and their property, leaving 115 injured,” Haq added, citing Hastings.
