The US considers Russia “an immediate and continuing threat”, but points out the need to adopt “pragmatic forms of interaction”

The United States has stressed that it does not recognize Taiwan’s independence and that it is committed to the one-China policy, according to the latest White House national security report released on Wednesday, two months after relations between Beijing and Washington became tense again after the visits of US political representatives to the island.
“We oppose any unilateral change to the ‘status quo’ on either side and we do not support Taiwan’s independence. We remain committed to our one-China policy,” Washington stresses in a report that also stresses its interest in maintaining its diplomatic agreements with Taiwan.
“We will uphold our commitments under the Taiwan Relations Act to support its self-defense and our ability to resist any use of force or coercion against Taiwan,” the White House report said.
The tension between China and the United States is experiencing a new episode in recent months, after the Speaker of the United States House of Representatives, Nancy Pelosi, will officially visit the island in early August, which Beijing considers part of his territory.
Pelosi’s visit was responded to by China by interrupting talks with the United States and carrying out a series of military maneuvers near the strait that separates both territories.
In the last decade, at least 150 congressmen from the United States have officially traveled to Taiwan, including 34 during the current administration of Joe Biden. These types of meetings are viewed with suspicion by Beijing, which considers them a threat to its sovereignty, in addition to a violation of the one China law that it signed in 1979 with Washington.
RUSSIA, “CONTINUING THREAT” AND “SOURCE OF INSTABILITY”
The White House published this Wednesday its new strategic plan on national security, in which, among other points, it has recognized that China is its “most important geopolitical challenge”, although it has trusted in being able to maintain a “peaceful coexistence” for the good of “human progress”.
On the other hand, Washington has also pointed out that “Russia represents an immediate and continuing threat” to security in Europe, as well as a source of “global instability”. However, he has stressed the need to develop “pragmatic forms of interaction” for “mutual benefit”.
