The UN "takes note" of the Cairo meeting between the Libyan councils and calls for commitment on the path to peace

7 Jan. (EUROPA PRESS) –

The United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) has “taken note” of the results of this week’s meeting between the representatives of the Libyan chambers in the city of Cairo at the request of the Libyan Presidential Council and urged the political leaders of the country to establish as soon as possible a new road map to achieve national stability.

In a statement collected by the Libya Observer, UNSMIL assumes, without pronouncing, the talks between the speaker of the House of Representatives, Aguila Salé, and the head of the High Council of State (HCS) based in Tripoli, Khalid al Mishri, that raised a new authority in charge of the preparation of this route map from a new “constitutional document”.

At almost the same time, the controversial Prime Minister of the Tripoli-based Libyan unity government, Abdulhamid Dbeibé, repudiated the talks and reiterated his willingness to hold elections in 2023 after accusing Saleh and Al Mishri of trying to share power through “suspicious deals”.

In the midst of this chaotic situation, UNSMIL “reiterates the obligations of the political leadership in Libya to demonstrate a genuine and continuing commitment to achieving lasting peace on the basis of previous agreements aimed at resolving the political crisis through elections as soon as possible.” “.

Likewise, the mission has reiterated the urgent need for a national agreement to establish a path towards the elections “with a specific timetable”, towards a new era for Libya, its neighbors and the region.

As on other occasions, UNSMIL reiterated its support for the right of the Libyan people to elect their leaders “with legitimacy restored to state institutions without further delay” and its willingness to support “initiatives aimed at achieving a national consensus that would pave the way for an inter-Libyan solution to the country’s political crisis”.
