The UN Security Council condemns the attack against MINUSMA in Mali in which a 'blue helmet' died

June 10 (EUROPA PRESS) –

The UN Security Council has condemned this Friday the attack against a patrol of the United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in Mali (MINUSMA) in which at least one “blue helmet” — from Burkina Faso — has died. and that has left eight seriously injured.

“They have stressed — council members — that attacks against peacekeepers may constitute war crimes under international law. They have stressed that involvement in planning, directing, sponsoring or carrying out attacks against MINUSMA peacekeepers constitutes a basis for sanctions designations in accordance with United Nations Security Council resolutions,” UN Security Council President Lana Zaki said in a statement. Nusseibeh.

In addition, the council has urged the Government of Mali to “promptly investigate” the attack and promote accountability, and has recalled that the security of UN personnel and property is the responsibility of host states.

“Any act of terrorism is criminal and unjustifiable, regardless of its motivation, wherever, whenever and by whomever it is committed,” the council reiterated, which has advocated fighting it “by all means” in accordance with the Charter of Nations Nations and International Law.

Mali and the rest of the Sahel countries have experienced an upsurge in violence, both jihadist at the hands of groups linked to Al Qaeda and the Islamic State, and inter-communal in nature, which has led France and the G5 Sahel countries — Burkina Faso, Chad, Mali, Mauritania and Niger– to increase their operations, a situation for which the Security Council has expressed its concern.

MINUSMA has deployed ‘blue helmets’ in the country since 2013, although relations have deteriorated as a result of the coups led by the leader of the military junta, Assimi Goita, in August 2020 and July 2021 and the postponements by the board when setting an electoral calendar for a democratic transition.
