The UN envoy for Yemen concludes his visit to Iran for the resumption of a political process in Sana'a

MADRID Jan. 14 (EUROPA PRESS) –

The United Nations special envoy for Yemen, Hans Grundberg, concluded a visit to Tehran this Monday, where he urged the Iranian authorities to join the UN efforts to achieve an immediate de-escalation of hostilities that would allow the resumption of a political process for the benefit of the Yemeni people.

“It is now more urgent than ever to provide Yemen with concerted and unified regional and international support to overcome complex regional dynamics, seize opportunities for peace and resume a constructive dialogue that can lead to a sustainable political resolution of the conflict,” he said.

The envoy has conveyed to Iran’s Foreign Minister, Abbas Araqchi, as well as other senior officials of the country with whom he has met, the “need to provide adequate political space to advance the road map”, while at the same time has warned of the “adverse impact” that the “regional escalation” may have on “the mediation environment.”

In addition, Grundberg has requested “Iran’s support” to achieve the “immediate and unconditional release” of UN personnel, NGO workers, diplomatic missions and civil society who have been “arbitrarily detained” by Yemen’s Houthi rebels. reminding the authorities of the Islamic Republic that these arrests “are contrary to International Law and seriously affect the ability of the United Nations to provide much-needed humanitarian aid in Yemen.”

The war in Yemen pits the internationally recognized Government, now represented by the Presidential Leadership Council and supported by the international coalition led by Saudi Arabia, and the Houthis, backed by Iran. The Houthis control the capital, Sanaa, and areas of the north and west of the country.
