The UN celebrates the release of Assange and trusts in the “definitive” resolution of the case

The UN Office for Human Rights has applauded the release in the United Kingdom of the founder of Wikileaks, Julian Assange, as well as the “significant steps” that have been taken in recent hours for the “definitive” resolution of the case initiated in the United States. “As we have said repeatedly, this case raised a series of doubts regarding Human Rights,” explained the spokesperson for said office, Liz Throssell, in statements sent to Europa Press. The UN was also concerned about the “prolonged” detention in the United Kingdom, which began more than five years ago after another seven years of detention inside the Ecuadorian Embassy in London.

“We will continue to monitor developments over the coming days,” Throssell said. Shortly after obtaining provisional freedom, Assange boarded a flight to leave the United Kingdom, thanks to an agreement with the North American authorities that involves pleading guilty to violating the Espionage Act in exchange for completing the period of imprisonment.

The agreement reached, however, must still be approved by a judge, an issue that has also been emphasized by the office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights.
